On Tuesday 15th September we worked with Manchester historian and tour leader Dave Smith to organise a walking tour of Manchester to discover its radical history.
The event was free to attend for those travelling by rail and was fully booked with 16 people taking part in total.
Dave really brought Manchester`s rich and fascinating past to life as the group made their way through the city. Daves talk included Canal street and how the city’s gay community contributed to the regeneration of the city. The tour also included a stop off by the Emmeline Pankhurst statue where the group discovered how the suffragette movement won women the vote. They also learnt about the history of the C-op, the anti corn law league, visited the site of the Peterloo massacre where a monument now stands to mark this tragic event and stood at the site of the 1996 bombing in Market street.
At the request of Dave the CRP has made a donation to the British Heart Foundation in lieu of his tour fee so thank you Dave for supporting such a worthwhile cause!
We will work again with Dave next Spring to organise a statues tour so please watch this space for a date!
