Mid Cheshire Line Baton Relay – Day 2

Day 2 of the Mid Cheshire Line Baton Relay started at the old Manchester Central Station which is now an exhibition centre.

The group, led by Ian Stuart were not tempted to head into the accounting conference going on there at the time and instead set off in the bright sunshine through the streets of Manchester.

This fascinating walk took them through the historic area of Castlefield with its locks and old warehouses, many of them now converted to apartments and waterside bars and cafes.

They followed the cities canal system which was surprisingly quiet and peaceful considering its urban location and passed by Old Trafford Football and Cricket ground.

They saw colourful graffiti art adorning bridges and tunnels and even spotted a heron poised to catch some dinner.

They stopped to have their own bite to eat in Trafford Gardens. Here they were joined by Ian’s friend Helen who had kindly volunteered to lead the walk for a stretch to save Ian’s legs.

The group joined the Bridgewater Canal in the afternoon before stopping for well-deserved refreshments in the canal side Bridge Inn.

Mike Battman took the lead for the second part of the walk to Altrincham and on arrival they celebrated in the warm sunshine and another round of drinks. Well done all.
