Salt Sunday

Lion Salt Works
8th May 2016

This year, the Bishop of Birkenhead will hold his annual Salt Sunday event at the award-winning, Lion Salt Works Museum near Northwich in Cheshire on Sunday 8 May.

This family event celebrates salt as a natural resource of Cheshire and aims to bring together the salt-making community in an afternoon of fun. This free event runs from 2-4pm and everyone is welcome.

During the afternoon visitors can marvel as ‘wild brine’ is transformed into salt crystals over a boiling open-pan.

Ingenious experiments involving making plastic caterpillars and creating a misty day with dry ice will also take place and are likely to be popular with children. In addition, there will be stalls and activities run by local businesses as well as a colourful Butterfly Extravaganza. The Bishop of Birkenhead, the Rt Rev Keith Sinclair, will also give a short service.

There is no charge to attend the event but normal charges* will apply to visitors who want to tour the Museum.

The Butterfly Extravaganza involves AgeUK and Museum staff bringing the site to life with colourful and vibrant decorations of knitted butterflies, a big enviro-art butterfly and a flutter of eco-butterflies.

The Museum’s Butterfly Garden, run by George Martin and Butterfly Conservation is home to Cheshire’s buddleia collection and has recently won funding to be one the first Polli:nation projects in the country, involving several local schools.
