IWA National Festival

6th June 2014 - 8th June 2014

Over 125 traditional canal boats will gather in Tower Wharf on the Dee Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal  for the festival, which takes place over the weekend of 6th - 8th June.

The event, which is organised by IWA Chester & Merseyside Branch will include an RAF Hawker Hurricane flypast, free angling taster sessions, pole dancing sessions, children's activities such as model boat making with Wild over Waterways, free boat trips and guided walks as well as food and refreshment stands and live music from rhythm & blues and brass bands.

The aim of IWA's Chester campaign is to restore the full use of the Dee Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, to allow safe passage for boats on to the upper reaches of the River Dee via a new lock in the Old Mill Race on the Handbridge side of the river.

From 2012 - 2014, IWA Chester & Merseyside Branch worked in partnership with Chester Canal Heritage Trust, Canal & River Trust and Chester Renaissance to develop a waterway strategy to support the Chester One City Plan.

This new Strategy, to be launched during the week of the Festival by Cheshire West and Chester Council, includes this “Vision”. The National Campaign Festival will highlight the benefits for Chester, such as an increase in tourism and waterside regeneration, that the Strategy will bring for the city.
